Accumulating snow acts as an insulator between the outside cold and your buildings roof. Below are a few tips to help reduce the risk of your home suffering a water damage while you are away on vacation. 

Lower the Thermostat 

Lowering your thermostat to reduce heating costs while you are away is acceptable. However do not turn the heat off, as this could cause water pipe breaks in your home during cold weather. 

Shut off the main water supply to your home

After the main water supply is shut off, run the taps for 5 minutes to release all the water pressure from the pipes. This will prevent a flood in your home if a pipe should break while you are away. 

Shut off certain water valves

If you have a friend or family member checking in on your home and do not want to restrict all water flow in your home, shut off certain water valves. This will help reduce the risk of pipe leaks in your home. 

A few other tips

-Do not shut the power off in the home. Unplugging certain electrical devices is acceptable, however making sure your refrigerator and sump pump keep power are important along with any security system you may have. 

- Make sure your sump pump is functioning properly before leaving.

Tsunamis

Tsunamis can strike anywhere on the US coast. It is good to know what to do if a tsunami strikes a place you or a loved one live or are vacationing.

Ready.gov says that a tsunami is also known as seismic sea waves. Tsunamis are a series of enormous waves created by an underwater disturbance, such as an earthquake, landslide, volcanic eruption or meteorite. Areas within a mile of the coast have a greater risk of being effected. 

If you should find yourself in an area where tsunami warnings are issued make sure to know the evacuation plan, move inland or to higher ground and avoid the beach areas. 

After a tsunami, do not return to the affected area until officials deem it safe.

Flooding is one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Floodsmart.gov reports in the last 5 years, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods. 

According to the American Red Cross, floods cause more damage in the US every year than any other weather-related disasters. The American Red Cross offers the following flood safety tips.

-Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up to a flowing stream where water is above your ankles turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving waters can sweep you off your feet. 

-If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car and head to higher ground. Cars can be swept away by less than two feet of water.

-Keep your children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running or contaminated water.

Winter Weather Can Bring Worries

Winter weather can bring about more issues than just slippery roads and a
sidewalk to shovel. If you live where temperatures sink below freezing level, you are also at risk for frozen pipes and ice dams, which can create a major disaster at your home or property.
FROZEN PIPES
Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in cold areas
such as basements, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.
A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the
ice blockage inside the pipe is located,
but typically the rupture
is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.
To prevent pipes from freezing, here are a few steps you can take, according to The American Red Cross:
Be sure to completely drain water
from swimming pool and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses.
Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air near the plumbing.
When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets that may come from exposed pipes.Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.
ICE DAMS
Ice dams can be a little-known,

You may ask yourself what is a sump pump and what it does? For those who do not know a sump pump is a pump that removes water to prevent flooding usually located in basements. Therefore, a sump pump failure can lead to flooding and damage of your basement.

These are the some of the reasons why sump pump failure happens:

No maintenance on Sump Pump:

It is recommended to keep maintenance of your sump pump to prevent from any backflow and causing flooding. Manufacturers recommend to keep maintenance of your sump pump every 2-3 months by:

• Cleaning the air hole in the discharge line

• Listen for unusual noises when the sump pump is running

• Sometimes the pump can run but not pump any water. This means the impeller has disengaged from the pump shaft or the check valve is installed backwards.

• Check that the discharge line  is not clogged or backed up

Frozen or clogged Discharge lines:

Spring Flooding in Your Frankfort Home

Advance Preparation

Watch for Pooling Water 

Look for places around your property where water pools, and channel it away from buildings. Make sure gutters and downspouts are clear of debris and they are directing water as intended.

Maintain Sump Pump
