2021 The Year of the Ice Dam
3/11/2021 (Permalink)
The winter storm of February 2021 caused headaches for homeowners and insurance companies alike. As the accumulated snow started to melt it caused the perfect element for ice dams to form.
In Illinois insurance companies report the highest level of ice dam claims in years. Generally during a polar vortex the highest level of claims comes from broken water pipes, however it is believed since more people are home due to the pandemic they were able to catch those issues early before they became major problems.
Ice dams form when warming temperatures and heat escaping from the roof cause snow to melt and pool up on the eves of the roof. During the night when temperatures drop the water refreezes causing ice build up under the roof shingles.
